Contemporary vertical preparations can be extremely conservative of tooth structure, especially when compared to traditional shoulders and chamfers. This course will focus on posterior teeth and ‘shoulderless’ style of vertical preparation.
Vertiprep is the choice of prep margin when:-
– Limited tooth structure remains
– You want to maximise ferrule effect
– Short clinical crowns
– Lack of enamel for adhesive bonding
– Subgingival caries/restorations

What will you learn during the session:
- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of Vertical Preparation.
- Recall the indications for Vertical Preparation.
- Understand the rationale for Vertical Preparations.
- Classify the difference between BOPT Preparation and Shoulderless Preparation.
- Understand the importance of having the correct burs when doing Vertical Preparations.
- Recall the preparation sequence using SHOULDERLESS Vertical Preparation.
- Develop the ability to identify and understand common mistakes made during preparation.
- Acquire knowledge on the different materials used.
- Learn techniques for effective soft tissue management to ensure accurate impressions or scanning.
- Learn and understand the step-by-step process of temporizing shoulderless preparation (the 2 main pathways).
- Understand the collaboration between dental practitioners and dental technicians for effective outcomes in Vertical crowns.
- Identify potential causes and risks associated with chipping during dental procedures.
- Recall the relevance of spacer settings for Vertical crowns.
- Learn the proper technique for cementation of VertiPreps and know which cements are commonly advocated.
- Identify common troubleshooting issues associated with VertiPreps and learn how to address them effectively (eg. improper seating).
- Acquire tips and strategies for ensuring long-term success and patient satisfaction with VertiPrep restorations.
- Understand the laboratory’s role in achieving precision and quality in restorative cases.

After graduating from Sheffield University in 2013 with a Clinical Distinction, Jaz completed Restorative Dental Core Training posts in both Guy’s Hospital and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. As an ‘Occlusion Geek’, he lectures on ‘Real World Occlusion’ and the use of Dental Splints.
